Online counselling? Could it help you?

Counselling and Therapy for Anxiety

In recent years, the idea of conducting counselling sessions in a format other than face-to-face was relatively uncommon. While some therapy sessions were held online, most counsellors and clients preferred in-person meetings.

However, online counselling has become much more common. Life in the last few years has become more stressful and for most people trying to fit in a therapy session adds to the stress. I work with my clients over Zoom, a secure and effective platform.

Additionally, counselling and therapy are now being conducted through text and email. While this approach may not suit everyone, it can provide valuable support during particularly challenging times.

Sometimes, simply knowing there’s someone you can turn to when you need help makes all the difference.

Online Counselling

The Essence of Online Counselling

Online counselling retains the same core principles as face-to-face sessions:

  • A pre-arranged, private consultation with a qualified professional.
  • A series of meetings aimed at resolving problems and alleviating anxieties.

Benefits of Online Counselling

One key advantage is the flexibility it offers, providing a wider range of appointment times throughout the day.

Does Online Counselling Work?

Yes, online counselling is highly effective, particularly for the approaches I use. I combine Psychosynthesis counselling with Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also known as tapping, which works well in an online format.

How Does Online Counselling Work?

You receive the same empathetic, non-judgemental service just delivered differently.

  • I typically use Zoom for sessions, but telephone consultations are an alternative for those uncomfortable with video calls. Switching between the two is also possible during a session.
  • Sessions last 60 minutes, a bit longer than face-to-face appointments.

Preparing for Your Session

I recommend finding a safe, comfortable place where you won’t be interrupted during the session.

Safety Consideration

Not everyone feels safe at home. If online therapy is chosen, certain precautions may need to be arranged, such as securing permission to contact emergency services (ambulance or police) if there is a medical emergency or a risk of harm.

How to select the right online counsellor for you

There is no obligation to accept the first qualified person as your counsellor. Speak to several counsellors or therapists and see which one you feel most comfortable with. I have worked with clients that have said they went to see someone who specialised in their issue only to find that they just didn’t feel comfortable. I have worked with clients where I have made it clear that I was not especially familiar with what they are bringing. However, the way I work is very accepting and does give a framework that the client gets to know themselves and how they operate in the world.

Some tips

Most counsellors offer a free first consultation by phone. This is so both of you can understand each other’s suitability. If a counsellor feels they cannot offer you the support you need they usually have a list of people they can refer you to.

Ask the counsellor what experience and qualifications they have to undertake online counselling

Check that the counsellor you are intending to work with is registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)

I offer a free first online consultation by telephone for 15/20 minutes.

If you feel depressed, have mood swings, or lack motivation some online professional support might be what you need.

While most of my counselling clients are in London because that is where I live and work, I draw enquiries from all over the country. If you would like to speak with a professional about your anxieties, contact me.
